"A musical rollercoaster ride"

Here's the pre-review JfH's John DiBiase posted.

Interesting. This review, though more critical than the others, makes me more excited for the album than any other review. 'Cause it gives me the impression that the album tilts towards indie-ness, and is musically diverse.
Oh! Gravity. seems to retread the band's more recent trend of pointing out problems while seldom ever suggesting any solutions.
I beg to differ with that part. I just think the solutions aren't as straightforwardly accessible as before (just like the rest of the lyrics--the parts where he points out the problems.) Their lyrics have evolved to become more epic and discreetly more poetic... but they still do offer solutions just as much as they always did. Its just not as spoon-fed anymore, compared to their previous work - which is a sign of maturity. I guess if that was for the kids, this is for the grownups.

The questions Switchfoot asks are difficult questions. There are never any easy answers. If they tried to give them, reviewers would probably criticize that, too.

One of the many beauties of Switchfoot's music is to make the listeners answer those questions in their own lives.

You have a great blog. Thanks for all your work.

Hi there Janet, I just started the blog the other day on an experimental basis, and someone's found it already :) I guess that's motivation to make it grow. Thank you for your kind words :) And yes, the questions Switchfoot asks make people uncomfortable, I'm sure. I'm glad they don't bundle it with answers, because, like you said, its more powerful when you make the listener try to answer it. "Maybe we're bent and broken" is a more powerful line than "we're bent and broken". When its in question form, people actually think about it - otherwise they think you're being pretentious. So yes, that's one of the beauties of SF's music. Anyway, thanks for reading.

hnh, I was just coming to leave a comment about the questions and answers thing, but now it'll be a little repetitious. I have to chim in and say, though, that that's what i love most about SF's lyrics. I love the questions, and the musings, and the wrestling with issues. I don't want answers. And besides, why do you have to give answers if you're going to write songs? What rock stars do I expect to have degrees in counseling or theology? come on! That's what really irritates me about ccm. Stop telling me to "give it to God," or "trust Jesus," because I don't know what that means! It's an easy way out of a real answer. Sometimes I think SF's questions are more answers than answers are.

So, wow, sorry about the rant. I didn't mean to do that! But I'm sticking with it, doggonit!
