| Reviews, etc.: The 'emo' word does it again. |
Our hit counter reports: January: 14,177 hits February: 28,656 hits
Considering this is a blog and not a full-fledged site with many pages/sections, I thought those numbers were worth sharing. As you can see, the hits have more than doubled in February, a month shorter by 3 days. Thanks guys, it's you who power those numbers.
SwedishSwitchfootFreak from the official boards posted about a Switchfoot concert review occupying the whole front page of a Swedish newspaper. She even got us pictures. Pretty sweet, huh?

One of our readers, Raph, informs us about another concert review (with pictures) of the Vancouver show, by an e-zine.
Another faithful reader, good ol' Ro-Jo, brings us the good news that AMG has finally reviewed "Oh! Gravity." A much awaited review by a much respected site - check it out. But...Switchfoot...emo?? As if the "Christian" label weren't unnecessary enough. It's a pretty good review otherwise. A rating of 3.5 usually means "very good album."
I hope you guys aren't forgetting to help yourselves to the great stuff Mike's been putting up at switchfootbootlegs.com
One of our readers, Em, won this rad surfboard from the HearItFirst.com contest. Congrats, Em! LOBH uploaded some pictures of it:

And, this is offtopic but I have to say it anyway, the new Anberlin, Cities , is...wow. Wasn't a fan before, but this one's won me over. Fans of arty modern-rock (a la Switchfoot, though this is more epic than "Oh! Gravity.") might wanna check it. out.

Re: 'emo' label
Who knows? It might be to their advantage. I'm a fan of the shoegazing era (when you were 9 years old?) and if I remember correctly, people sometimes referred to the Smashing Pumpkins as shoegazers, and it didn't hurt. :) (Although I do have a bad memory).

I don't know, I just don't at all associate Switchfoot and emo-ness. But then again, I don't generally associate anything good with emo-ness. And "Christian-emo"?? That's too much... I wish we weren't always so quick to slap labels on music, when the important thing isn't really the style, but how well the music is done.
In other news, I just ordered Cities, and I'm excited to get it. I think Anberlin is great... :)

speaking of album recommendations, phil, you NEED to listen to cursive's happy hollow. its one of the most painfully honest albums on the foibles of organized religion. if you thought the ugly organ was good, this one will blow you away.
-
p.s. - did you admit to it being more epic than O!G?
-
Gosh...when I see reviews like that, it's painfully obvious to me that it's the reviewer's first real experience with the band. I'd argue with the rating too (I'd agree with their 3 stars to Nothing Is Sound, but O!G is another 4-star disc like The Beautiful Letdown).
Also, since when do Switchfoot fans care about AMG? They rather butchered their review of The Legend of Chin as well.
-
@G haha I love shoegaze. Heard of Starflyer 59?
@tina, haha yeah it's more epic than O!G, which doesn't get any more epic than "Circles". NIS was more epic. But O!G's light feel isn't a bad thing - I love it. Another NIS would've been slightly painful.
@Dan, I agree that 4 stars would've been more accurate. IMO, 3 stars would be accurate for TBL and 3.5 for NIS.
-
ok phil, i thought when you meant "epic" you were using it like the word "awesome."

Phil, you still haven't posted part 2 of your "shoe-shining" experience in Vancouver. Just curious to know what happened! :)

I think emo describes Switchfoot quite well. Emo is emotional, and since when is Switchfoot not singing about emotions, feelings, ect.? They may not be emo in the sense of how teeny boppers view it (wearing black nail polish and eyeliner.. aka a fashion statement), but they are extremely "emotional" and that is something I love about them.
Ah, Cities, refreshing, no? Anberlin has finally put out something worth listening to. They're on the cover of Relevant this month, in case you didn't know.
-
no emo is like, whiney and feeling unnecessarily sorry for yourself. if you want to describe them as emotional, you shouldn't use the word emo, because no one will understand what you really mean.
uh oh. i'm arguing with vicky again...darn myers-briggs stuff...
-
tread lightly, gellie. you don't want vicky as an enemy.

If you use the word emo honestly, if does apply to them. I'm not speaking in the Simple Plan, musical emo sense of the word, but the actual meaning. (If you have 16 of their songs on your Itunes, you are free to judge them) I like to use words the way they were meant to be used, not the way society twisted them into being.

I'd have to disagree with you, there. SF sings about things greater than emotions, feelings, and thoughts (note "24"), and although those things are certainly not left out, that's not the focus, thus "emo" is a bit of a misnomer. In my humble opinion.
-
concert review = also "refreshing"
-
vicky - i agree w/ Gelli. if ya wanna use the word "emo" you can't really seperate it from how society has twisted it - like it or not, that's the sad reality. if you want anyone to understand you, you'll have to specifically define the term for them. so in this case, emo is a bad word to define switchfoot because everyone will just think of society's meaning.
