MOTW #12: Future Of Forestry - Twilight

(Update:) This blogger had some kind words about Switchfeed and the MOTW feature. Glad you enjoy it, Dan.
--

I apologize for the lack of MOTW's for the past couple of weeks - last weekend, I was in Arizona, and this weekend I was sick. But I'm back with a new band to get your music fix on. Getting their name from a C.S. Lewis poem, Future of Forestry are San Diego locals who make some amazing music, and have been for some time (previously as Something Like Silas). Ever since I heard a couple demos they'd put up on myspace, I was hooked, and started following them. The album, Twilight, that came out a couple months ago, is definitely hook-a-licious, and definitely genius.

The song this week is the title track from their debut album, and one of the reasons I love this song (and album) is the dreaminess that each track is able to capture. The swirling background has such an amazing ability to draw the listener in that I bet I could use this song as my own personal lullaby. Another big reason this song is so great is the that there is this amazing conflict that is taking place in the lyrics. 'How do I get to the other side?' is the question I find myself asking:

So, enter the other side,
It sounds like a lullaby.
In this twilight,
We are pale,
And on this frail side,
Nothing else could be so real...

The singer, Eric Owyoung, has this gentle voice that compliments the song beautifully, and just adds so much more to the already great song. Another great night driving song... but this one goes out to the dreamers (sorry romantics, you had your run :p). So download the album or pick it up wherever its available, pop it into your car, and enjoy this song/album cranked up with your windows rolled down.

Future of Forestry - Twilight

Full Lyrics:
Once upon a time,
When we were young,
We thought we'd escape from it all,
But we were wrong.

Then unexpectedly,
We're in a dream,
So faintly we didn't notice,
Or did we?

So, enter the other side,
It sounds like a lullaby.

In this twilight,
We are pale,
And on this frail side,
Nothing else could be so real.

Is it nostalgia?
Is it the sun?
Cause it won't leave us alone,
And we're still young.

When we sat down to pray,
If you saw my eyes,
You'd know I just couldn't close them,
Not all night.

Enter the other side,
It sounds like a lullaby.

In this twilight,
We are pale,
On this frail side,
Nothing else could be so real.

I hope you're better Arpit. have some soup.
I really like this song, I could totally imagine falling asleep to it...it's so peaceful and relaxing. The mixutre of the lyrics and the music are perfect.
I think this might be my favorite MOTW so far. *sigh*

FoF is awesome! They are the coolest bunch of guys, and their music is amazing. They are a real talent. They deserve a lot more recognition than they have had so far. Relevant Magazine ranked the new album 6 on a scale of 7. Pick up a copy wherever you can find it.

Ah Relevant Magazine... they always catch on to good music a few months after me :p

I remember when I was telling people about MuteMath, and then a buddy of mine read about them in Relevant... yeah, they need to hire me :D

The date on your post is November 26, 2007. Interesting how time flies so quickly.

Enjoyed this band, though. I will be checking into them more in the near future!

^oh! haha. well, arpit posted this MOTW a bit too soon after our previous post of unreleased new songs, and i wanted to delay it a bit to do justice to both posts. so i changed the date on this MOTW thereby burying it deep into the archives, but now when i reserructed it, i didn't fix the date properly. thanks for pointing that out, haha - fixed.

When I right click I don't have the option to 'save target as' and when I open the link into a new page it just plays the song from a (media) player.

I love the song, though! Good one.
Wish I could download it. Maybe at the computers at my school.

hmm... I actually have permission to play FoF on my podcast, but I've only played one of their songs, because I just never really got into their self-titled EP, and I kind of forgot about them. But this post inspired me to go back and listen some more, and I think I've decided that, even though I don't love their louder, rockish tracks, they really shine in mellower songs like "Twilight". I'm thinking I might play this song on my show this week...

Thanks for the post, Arpit, and for your consistently awesome musical taste!! I look forward to the next one...

PS - Arpit, have you heard of Lost Ocean? They're another band off of Credential Recordings, and their music is absolutely beautiful. I suggest that you check them out...

@ Jill - their faster stuff is pretty good, but they definitely do a better job on their slower songs... what show?

Heh, been their myspace friend for about 6 months now - they're pretty good - haven't heard the album though - I believe it just came out in the last couple weeks, yeah?

@ Emily - what browser are you using? It should allow you to save... it's just a standard mp3 file.

@ Kim - yeah, they're definitely worth looking into - I'd recommend getting the entire album... I can't say I disliked a single track.

    @ Phil - *shakes head*

I think Lost Ocean's album came out about a month ago. The whole thing is really excellent. They have this ambient indie pop-ish sound that is somehow really relaxing and really addictive at the same time.

"The show" is my podcast, Ears to Hear (www.earstohearpodcast.com). I play indie music that abounds in overall goodness to listen to. :D

    Glad you liked it Kayla.

I just noticed that I actually wrote: "definitely hook-a-licious and definitely genius"... wow, I need to stop being overconfident :p

@ jill, will be listening to EarsToHear. Looking forward to it.

    @ arpit, well done.

@ arpit again, so is FOF a Christian band? "Gazing" would certainly suggest so. Most of this album is so advanced though, I would be surprised if they were a proclaimed Christian band. (No offence to anyone that might offend)

@ all, nevermind, "Stay Beside Me" just answered my question.

Heh... I'm forced to find creative ways around Phil's "no Christian bands" policy :D

    'hook-a-licious and definitely genius' :D
you're only overconfident if the song's a flop arpit, and that it surely ain't.

    I can tell you're a california boy.

I SO knew it! *shakes head* I'm gonna start telling on you. *looks around for Phil...*

Oh, and this is a great song. Thanks.

    @ Mukta - hah, I guess.

@ Heather - yes, I am most definitely a California dude (that's right, that's how we roll), but I should mention SoCal (NorCal's a little dreary and depressing :p). And it's just randomly worked out that way - at least half the bands I've posted are Christian, but without any of the "christian music" strings attached. And I can get away with it since Phil posted Starflyer 59 :D

I really liked the MOTW choice, Arpit. It's definitly one of my favorites. I've listened to it lots since yesterday. Perhaps when I get some money (after paying off school fees), I can buy the cd. :)
