| On This Date in Switchfoot History... |
Hola amigos, happy father's day. We're sitting here in an airport in Cincinatti, flying home for a few days, and I've just had a shocking revelation: 10 years ago to the date, our debut album "The Legend Of Chin" was released. 10 years is a long time. Wow, still letting that sink in. For those of you who've never heard our first record, we've uploaded one of our favorites from that album to our myspace to commemorate the occasion.
I'm so thankful to be in a band with my best friends, and so thankful for all of the people that have supported our music over the years, and given us a floor to sleep on. June 17, 1997 -- the release date of our first record -- came just 4 days after I graduated High School. We celebrated with a CD release concert just down the street from our house at a little theater named La Paloma. Then we headed across the street for an afterparty at the coffee shop that I worked at, 25 East E (now extinct, like many other fine independant coffee houses). One of our favorite local bands, Lamont (also now extinct), played in the corner as we enjoyed a surreal evening surrounded by friends, dreaming about our upcoming first tour -- a scrappy 2-week run of shows in Europe. Fast forward 10 years... we've shared more memories than I could ever recount. We've laughed, cried, hurled, and lived through many near-death experiences. We've driven to Canada on accident. We've slept on the streets of London. We've watched the sun set on 7 continents. We've seen the sun refuse to quit in Alaska. We've been cheered, and we've had things thrown at us. We've been welcomed by some, and misunderstood by others. We've felt the joy new life, and we've shared the sting of death and loss. Simply put, we've been through everything together. I've heard it said that faith is remembering. It's moments of reflection such as this that I'm reminded of just how small we are, that we are merely a short sentence in the midst a much bigger story still being written. And I am also reminded of God's faithfulness. Thank you Jesus, my sweet Lord. You have been so good to me. I remember, and I am humbled. -tim |

I'm loving this post. I'm so frequently reminded of how I've fallen short of God's glory, but I'm also reminded of the fact that He still loves me & won't forsake me no matter how many mistakes I make. It is truly moments like these when I am reminded & floored by God's faithfulness.
Thank you for helping me take a step back from my day & breathe. Have an awesome Father's Day, & I'll see ya'll next time you swing by Tulsa, OK!

I know that 6.17 is a special day for you guys and I just had to say that 6.14 is a day that I'll never forget. It was the first time I saw Switchfoot in concert and in the last few days I was remembering why I love this band so much. not only was I introduced to a great band with great music that day, I was introduced to some truely genuine and sincere people. many congrats! that post almost made me shead a tear, especially the last part-ish. Driven to Canada on accident huh? I wish you guys did that more often like say in 6 days....arrive in canada (toronto specifically) on the 23rd of june "by accident" and oh, also accidently perform at kool haus/guvernment again. i don't know..that'll make certain birthday girl really happy. =) but alas, dreams do not always have to come true and that's cool too.
man, 10 years ago, I was 10,watching power rangers, and unaware of the goodness that is switchfoot. Good thing I grew up.
Thanks for being so down to earth, genuine, and humble. Thank you for helping me strengthen my faith in our Lord and encouraging me to be a better person. God bless you all! You guys have truly been and will always be, a blessing in my life.
Much love.

happy father's day, guys!
"We've been welcomed by some, and misunderstood by others."
Continue doing what you're doing, you have no idea how you inspired us through your music and the way you live your life. God bless your hearts for the good deeds that you've done to humanity. Take care, guys! We love you!!!
-
Ten years...wow. Congratulations! Thank you for all that you've done and all that you do! Your music has moved me in many ways. I am so glad to have discovered your music these past couple of years. You guys are such an inspiration to the world! Thank you for being so kind and humble and true. Keep doing what your doing! May God bless your lives! We love you!
-
Happy Father's Day! To the fathers in the band, to you guy's fathers, and of course to our Heavenly Father.
Ten years today huh? Amazing. You guys and your music have inspired me in too many ways to count. I have become more appreciative of music and of the words that go along. I feel like I have become more wise and informed of the world through you guys. You look at things differently than other people and I love that. Thanks for all you've done and gone through in the past ten years and I pray that you have ten more blessed years whether you continue the band in the future or not. Thanks for your time. We are one tonight!
-
Oh yeah I forgot to say, thanks for being so humble, honest, and true. That's not as easy as it looks so thanks alot! One of the reasons I like your music so much is that you don't just sing about happy things. You sing about honest feelings whether that's discontentment or hope. I can't seem say thanks enough! lol
Sorry I posted so much... hehe
-
I am your oldest fan (61) and had a chance to see your concert in Knoxville. God has blessed all of you especially Jon. Your ability to write the songs and translate by your lyrics where most people have been in their life. Please don't wait 5 yrs to come back to this area. May the lord bless all of you.
-
Hey Tim,
Great stuff man. It is good to see you still give honor and glory to our Lord and Savior. Without Him, we are nothing.
Congrats on the ten year anniversary. I look forward to following you guys for many years to come. You guys are awesome!
-
Congrats guys for ten years! Here's to ten more and beyond!
I love you guys, tho you may not know me.
-
-
Thank you Tim and Switchfoot. God has truly blessed you guys!
-
-
I've come to know and love your music through my children (especially my daughter, Lydia, also known as Cupcake). We are Christians, and when she first started listening to your music, I was a bit skeptical about your music. Over time I began to really listen to your words (I had no choice, lol!), and I love what you all write. You are all very unique. Your parents must be very proud of you! I would hope my children grow up to follow the path God has for them. See you at Spirit West Coast (my daughter has been working this summer to earn money to go). Gotta love that!
-
Wow, Legend of Chin brings back a lot of memories for me too. I was 15 years old then, and I spent a lot time with that album - it's like an old friend to me. It's crazy to think that 10 years ago, 3 guys playing guitars and drums in San Diego could inspire a kid like me in small town Missouri, but that's what happened. Thanks guys.
-
amen to that, tim. congratulations on ten years, thank you for sticking it out through the rough parts so we can experience these amazing tunes you guys have to offer. and thanks for always involving us, the big switchfamily :) even though i was only seven (probably liked watching arthur more than rocking out..) when chin came out, i have had many a time since then where its songs have rung true to my heart. i just finished high school three days ago, and it makes me excited to realize that i can't even imagine the adventures God has waiting for me, who knows where i'll be in ten years!? so thank you again, you guys may never know the blessing your music has been to me, may God contiue to bless you. love
-
congrats on your 10 year anniversary! you guys have done so much- even more than you know! i hope you realize how much we all truly, truly care for you. you guys mean so much to us! and though we won't really understand how much work you've put into this band, we can take an educated guess. we can only imagine the sacrifices and hard times you've had to go through, but we thank you for sticking it out. we're thankful for your making music and sharing it with us. what a journey.. here's to 10 more..? :)
-
You guys are not only a butt-kicking band but you're more true to yourselves than I can ever hope to be. A lot of people don't understand why I love you so much but it's not just the music, it's the intent behind the music, it's your deep lyrics and themes, it's your moral standing that has never quavered. It's rare to see bands now who still talk about how thankful they are and who don't take themselves too seriously. Thank you.
-
congratulations, guys! i am blessed and thankful to have been introduced to your music by my bro, phil.. wish you the best in all u do.. god bless :) love always, lydia
-
You guys are just so awesome!!! Thank you for rocking for Jesus. Hope to have you around making more great music for many, many, many more years! God bless you all and your families!
-
I am not 60 yet but, not a young adult either, or so my age says. (I do not feel my age.) But, your lyrics, and other words, totally inspire me!!!! You are awesome!!! As I make my way through my Bible, I keep finding your messages there!!! You are truly fishers of men. Praise the Lord!!! And your music ROCKS the house down!!!
Happy Father's Day. Peace, dudes!
Love, Cheryl in Texas
-
Congratulations Switchfoot! Even though I haven't been on the entire journey for the last decade, I'm glad that I joined the movement. I love how your music is revolutionary. It forces me to think outside the mundane and routine.
Meeting you in Feb. on your Canadian tour was a highlight of my year. I was amazed at how genuine and sincere you are. Thanks for being real people! Keep making timeless, thought-provoking music. :)
-
Here's to ten more years, and ten more after that.
-
I am SO glad you have stuck around for 10 years. I was 7 years old, listening to spice girls when The Legend Of Chin was released.. I can honestly say that I'm sorry it wasn't Switchfoot! :) You guys are amazing. I am so thankful for Switchfoot. I hope you all had a nice time with your families on Father's Day.
-
I wish i was listening to ya'll 10 years ago instead of britney spears! anyways, i loved the song "Life and Love and Why" (hope i got that right!). the first time i heard ya'll was "The Beautiful Letdown" album, and I have been a switchfoot fan ever since! Adios!
-
hey. june 17th is my birthday
also "life, love, and why" are one of my favorite songs by you guys
thanks
-
amazingly written, tim =]
-
Sadly i haven't listened to your music for ten years. I have only been listening for 3 years. The first CD of yours that i heard was The Beautiful Letdown. The time that the Legend of Chin came out i was unfortunately unable to listen to it since i was only 3 years old.
-
I keep telling my daughter you're coming over for Mexican one day, and she laughs.
-
beautifully put, tim. i especially enjoyed the last part. the music you guys put out has encouraged me beyond words in my walk with God. happy anniversary.
-
Tim, I'm in a band too..and what an awesome statement of faith man! I'm so glad that you guys are reaching this world with your message and deep songs! Thanks for making us think! and thanks for living for Jesus! it's such an encouragement to me that we can be relevant in an age where Christ isn't so important anymore! Stan
-
I've been listening to you guys for a while. I wasn't there from the beginning. Since about 2001. I have 2 favs from Legend of Chin. Chem 6A and You. Thanks for the music. - Darlene
-
kutose to you Tim!!! i heard that your nick name was or is Bones....? howed you get that nickname?!?!?!? ~lydia
-
Wow. Reading that made me realize just how great our God is. We have plans, but His are even greater. I'm sure the guys from Switchfoot never imagined they would be where they are today, but because of their faithfulness, they have been blessed to be able to touch the lives of others, including me. Thank you Switchfoot, and God Bless.
-
Sweet!!!!!!!
I have been listening to you guys since New Way To Be Human, and have bought everything that you have thrown my way. I love it! And, I am not joking when I say this, you truly are my favorite band. I love the way you make up funky songs like Poperatzi and Dirty Second hands, and I love your fast paced ones, and I really love the slow and meaningful ones...
Just keep the ball rolling for another ten years and make another trip to Charleston SC!!!!
Norris
-
@SahwnaLea: yah the songs move me too, in a major way. that album made a huge impression on me. i hope the boys do some more songs off of it in the near future.
@That-One-Anonymous-Who's-Been-Listening-To-Switchfoot-For-A-Year-Now: a year might not seem like very long since the boys have been making music for over a decade, but it's nothing to be ashamed of. 365 DAYS OF LISTENING TO MUSIC THAT IS MAKING US BETTER PEOPLE IN THE WORLD AND AS FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST. have pride in that.
@no one in particular: i just hafta say that i feel incredibly blessed by this band, these guys are doing some amazing things.
i fell asleep listening to "home" on sunday.
-
you guys are so awesome, and Christ has given you an amazing talent. NO matter how small you are, your impact is bigger than you can even imagine. Your music has effected my life so much, and i just want to say thank-you!!!
-
Hey
Guys, i think that the Legend is the best album you ever make. Thank you for this album and also for the others albums...
But, I think, that you weren't in Czech republic, so you must correct it :)
I'm writing a internet page about you, and I must say that yours songs are not so easy for translate!! :) But you can visit my guest-book about you at http://switchfoot.wbs.cz/index.php?menu=8 I will be really keen if I will find there your contribution ;)
Sorry for my bad English
Bless
