I think it was a good try. I think the singer needs to do more than just walk back and forth, but hey, I'm just happy that people want to cover switchfoot. Nice choice. ;)
Cool. Those guys were really into it. So...they can't say drugs, but they can have 'sex' on a really huge screen behind them? haha. But yeah, pretty good!
Well, did any of us actually expect the lead singer to be as good as Jon? Jon's style is pretty unique...but hey, for just some band doing a cover, they weren't bad at all. I'll give 'em a yay.
i was waiting for some guitar shredding but it wasn't there...it was amateur, as lyse^ said. his voice is okay...but Jon's is stickin' classy! =] ~lydz
He muffed the lyrics. A lot. He said "every night" instead of "every day" in the prechorus. The guitars and stuff were all pretty good though. The part where he doesn't say "needs love like drugs," it sounds to me like he's trying yo get the crowd to sing it.
good voice BUT #1 not jon, #2 too much emphasis on "lets do it again" and less on "i know what youre thinking now - before you think it you can SETTLE DOWN". in my opinion thats one of the points of the song. duh
NAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!It is not SWITCHFOOT!!!!!!!!!He messed up the lyrics and yeah I agree, what is up with the whole SEX thing in the background?!? He sings ok but he is no Jon, I only have a love for Jon's very handsome voice!!!!!!!!!! A very handsome voice to go with a very handsome man!!!:D I LOVE YOU JON!!!!!!!<3333
@anonymous: of course they're not switchfoot. it's a cover. and as such, it shouldn't sound exactly like the original band. The point of a cover is to put your own spin on a song, since you can never perfectly replicate the original.
It really wasn't as awful as everyone's saying. so he dropped a few words here and there - so what? and of course his voice doesn't sound like jon's, but that's not the point. he sang with his own voice. good for him.
The band's not Switchfoot. So naturally they can't play it as well as Switchfoot. But for a cover, that's not bad. Sure, he messed up a few words and he's not as a singer as Jon, but then again who is? I'm in a band and from that perspective I can say that they did an incredible job at covering such an awesome song.
I guess it's the same as another band doing a cover of a Beatles song or something, but it's still pretty weird to hear someone who's NOT Switchfoot perform a Switchfoot song. And "Amateur Lovers" without Jon's voice is a little sad. It's just destined to be that way. ...But these guys aren't terrible! - it would have taken me years to learn that one!!
I give them an A for effort. I don't think it was that bad. I can see when a band does a cover, it's hard not to compare to the original band. But think about this......Switchfoot's been together a lot longer than this band and of course they will definitely be a lot better up on stage. You have to start somewhere, right?
I actually like when other bands do cover songs and seeing/hearing their version.
That was pretty good! But Switchfoot is still better. It was a great effort and they did really good. I would never be able to do that. Jon's voice is better too!
it said "SEX" in the props probably because it was a seminar or something on the subject. maybe this happened at a church?
it's of course not even close to as good as the original is, but I give them an A for effort. the vocals had it's strong and weak points- but I loved the ending, where he screamed out "let's do it agaiiiiinnnn" (wait, that's what he screamed right? I watched this yesterday so not sure I remember correctly...)
Not too bad, I reckon. Of course, we'd all prefer the original, and although they didn't perform it as passionately as switchfoot does, they still seemed pretty into it. We're probably all used to Switchfoot playing the song but I think these guys did a good job as a band. And of course, as he's not Jon, the singer wouldn't have Jon's unique voice. Very unlikely anyway...
yeah it probly is a SEX thing...you know they probly worked hard on that song to try and make it special. everyone here OBVIOUSLY doens't like it, but i give them props for trying! me comment^ was more of an "i dont' like them too" but they were okay...they didn't SUCK!
Nay. Todally. they were good. but. it didn't have the switchfoot feeling to it. ylknow, switchfoot has a feeling. a footy feeling. Also, they added in backing vocals.
I was going to comment much earlier, but I didn't want to be the first to say 'Nay', Ha!
They needed one of those guitarist to get onto a keyboard or piano or something that can make that sound. They rushed some parts a little. Since they had no keys, they could have toyed around a little with another guitar to add some extra layers in the music. The tune wasn't gritty enough. (Could have just been audio quality that you can't hear everything going on)
Harsh critics we all are! Ha, but it's the only way to improve, as all musicians continually learn.
I'm somewhere in between. As far as covers go, this was pretty good, and they were into it. BUT... they didn't go the extra mile with they music and put some extra motifs like the brass thing, dynamic changes, and other fine details that really make the song.
i think it's really good. i'm guessing that it says sex on the back because of the content of the song. This song is basically easier than love 2. i think it's a really good cover. didn't he just skip the drugs part because he was saying, "guys go like this" to the crowd?
i love this song, but not by them! and easier then love is my fav song on NIS so yeah, im kinda hopping this band doesn't do it[that was kinda harsh, huh?]
haha.it says 'sex' on the back screen. because the band's called "the best sex ever" .. that is a weird name.but they did alright on this cover.but yes i agree with everyone else..its lacking jon's FANTASTIC voice :]
Hey im steve-o, im the guy playing guitar in the blue. Yes this song was apart of a four part sex series we did at our church(Marathon Community Church in Powdersville South Carolina). That is why there is a big "Sex" sign. It just makes a good stage effect and gets people talking so they will bring there friends. We did some more covers for that series not all switchfoot. I just love this song and we tried to do it. No its not SF but we had fun doing it.
let me put this into perspective for some of you. NO this is not switchfoot, so OBVIOUSLY its not as good and the guys in this video would even admit that. Also this was not a concert it was a student worship service at a church. Also, the band is made up entirely (with the exception of the lead singer) of high school students.
That being said, I think these guys rock! Mad props for attempting a not-so-simple song in order to make a good point and get these students pumped up.
Another side note, the lead vocalist in this video is Chasen Callahan, lead singer of "Chasen" an up and coming Christian band currently on tour. check out www.chasenmusic.com for more info on him and his music (pretty good stuff!)
OK, I was the first poster and I "nayed" not having the knowledge that has since come forth.
Big Time props to these guys being a group of high schoolers performing in support of their church work.
A comment for Switchfeed...maybe a bit of context setting prior to asking for Yay or Nay comments would be useful next time. I feel bad for the guys in the band since some comments may have been with an assumption that they were trying to be something more than what it ends up being.
i didn't feel like the lead singer got into enough, he was just walking around and filiming stuff. that son gyou gotta go crazy on especially if your the singer. its a fun song don't just walk around!
okay i was there, the sex thing is because it was at church. and the series that they were talking about was the best sex ever. so there were two more of the banner things..so yea.
but i love these guys and i think thet did awesome!
This is actually the youth prasie band from my church, Marathon Church in SC. I am biased but they did a great job. As for the SEX on the screen, we were in the middle of a sex series. The messages were teaching teens what the Bible says about sex. No, they aren't Switchfoot, but for a group of Middle School and High School kids, I applaud their efforts.
the cover is ok. the lead singer sounds alot like jon, but you can tell it's not him. someone who likes SF a little or never heard of them would like it. but to me as a fan, the song is not the same as when SF does it.
yeah it is all right ... I like the singer's voice it does sound like jon alot but with a more punk rock sound ..... its cool...... I like the cover good job.. the sf song though is way better I would have to say..
If only the songwriters sang their songs I would have never heard "this land is your land", or "blowin' in the wind" so here is to people who do covers and bring great songs to more people. - Cheers!
As many people have already posted I just wanted to say that indeed this was for a youth service at Marathon Community Church (www.marathonchurch.org) and the guys did a GREAT job with it, the series was called "The Best Sex Ever" hence, "the screen", there were also two other screens that said "best" and "ever" the lesson involved was that the best sex ever is after marriage as God intended. This youth group is an amazing bunch of kids living for Christ day in and day out, and as somebody has already said the entire band is still in high school and tremendously talented. I know they did not post this video for any reasons other than to promote their youth service "amp'd" and Im sure never expected the guys from SF to get ahold of it.
The lead singer is super talented as well and has an awesome band of his own (www.chasenmusic.com) who is currently on tour.
I think with all that said they did an awesome job!!
For the record: This band is our YOUTH GROUP band, almost completely composed of the kids in the youth group. Oh yeah, and for the "SEX" sign, we held a "Best Sex Ever" series, talking about how the best sex ever is doing it according to God's plan=after marriage. Yay; good stuff guys! Taylor
i know that this has been pretty well covered, but i'd still like to agree with all of the ppl that have been saying that this is not sf, this is not jon, so of course it doesnt sound like it. obviously it doesnt feel like watching a clip of a sf concert, but i still thought it was really good, considering that amateur lovers is not an easy song to cover. mad props to the youth band and steve-o and marathon church. God bless you all, you guys. the conferance sounds good...i totally agree. sex is best after marriage.
so many of you are so harsh! i think they did a great job! (in particular considering the fact that they are a youth band). plus it's a cover, of course it's not going to sound exactly like the original, how lameo is that? i love seeing (hearing?) other peoples perspectives on something. *cough*sorrow*cough*. i think covers are meant to make a song your own, not do a carbon copy of the original. i say yay.
First I'm like "wah? he's changing the words." Then I'm all "well, I guess if he really wants to." Then I realize "wait, his changes sound kinda weird, Every night I still try? What is that?" So, I think it was okay. Not Switchfoot, but what can you expect really? It was a good try at a good song by a really good band. It could have been worse.
Just an addition to my comment: His voice isn't like Jon's. I'm not complaining, I mean I don't expect him to sound like Jon. He has a good voice. It's just different. And I get Gellie's point of putting their own spin, but they didn't really do that. They tried to do it like the original, and it was okay. I'm not saying it was particularly bad, it just wasn't like "wow that's awesome."
STEV-O thank you for answering why it says 'SEX' on the thing! much thanks! @reianna: yeah id think anyone here is saying 'wow thats awsome.' LOL! but i agree....they didn't have REALLY their own thing, besides changing the words.....but im also not saying that they didn't put a twist that they sound like SF either. but thats just me ~lydz
Off-topic, but I read on Wikipedia that Head Over Heals (In This Life) was released to Christian AC Radio on Sept. 4, does anyone know whats gping with that?
I thought it was pretty good for a youth group band. The guy has a pretty good voice, and covers aren't meant to sound exactly like the original, people don't seem to notice that.
First things first- no one is better at playing Switchfoot songs better than Switchfoot! but besides that, I think they're pretty good. Although I was kinda missing Jon's voice and Jerome's cowbell solo, but I'll say yay anyway. =)
Well I have to agree with the ones who said it is a church service and not a concert. but I will say that I saw the lead singer Chasen Callahan perform at the Reliant k concert in Asheville NC. and he was awesome live and his voice was very powerful. (Chasenmusic.com) I think the band was great, to all be in high school and I think a church having series called Best Sex Ever is awesome to. For me I would really like to know What Jon and the boys in switchfoot think
@the daily foot: im sooooo glad you guys had an awsome time in New Zealand! if you didn't i would have to recommend some places to go to surf and hang out...[I REALLY hope you guys went to drive some rad go carts! down there they go about 50mph! SICK, I KNOW!] i hope you guys had fun with all the ppl over in the islands[i love their voices!] over all..its awsome that yall got to go there and enjoy your selves... i did, and you should have too ;) ~lydz
wow, why do you guy post this crap??????? some random people no one cares about. lots of people do covers like this. who cares. the lead singer is trying way to hard to be like jon
I enjoy this band. There play some sweet mucis at our Youth Church. Not all of it sounds perfect but they are doing it for one reason and that is to see kids make a change in the way the live.
You should check out there myspace. www.myspace.com/msmband
Also I love Switchfoot and can't wait to see you guys at Greenville South Carolina.
ok, constructive criticism is ok. Attacking isn't. Be respectful.
It's not switchfoot. It's a band who chose to cover a song of one of the best bands of all time. They're obviously very smart, and have a good musical taste. I think they did a great job, I never could've done as great of a job as they did. Maybe if I had a year or so to do it, but man, that was pretty dang good.
would love to know what switchfoot thinks about it. I'm on staff at the church this was filmed at. What is so awesome about this is the fact that these guys did this to reach kids for Christ. Not to make it on the front page of switchfoot's web site. That's where serving God can lead you. Further than you ever intended.
Hey Switchfoot! come visit us at Marathon Church when you come to Greenville SC. We are about 10 minutes from the Bilo Center. Can't wait for the show.
um yah im with x3beccamariex3...that one anonymous post was pretty harsh. respect the fact that this band made an effort to emulate the band that we love. @the band that did the cover: good job you guys!
I already made a comment, but it was like the 3rd or 4th comment, so I'm going to make another one. I always get a little amused when these threads get so long and people get so bent out of shape over it.
I give this band golf claps. *clap clap* Maybe it was a seminar, maybe it was a garage gig, or maybe it was a church youth band, but whatever. They made it through the song, chose a great band and song to cover, and ultimitly had it put on youtube which lead them to switchfeed and viewed by all of us.
I'd say that's quite an accomplishment no matter how amature or p-p-professional your band is.
ummm wow! im with die-to-live! that was harsh but it's okay if you don't like them, you don't HAVE to. i still say nay, but i give them PROPS!(like i said earlier) i like that they worked so hard on that song. anyone who can get up on a stage and play a switchfoot song(or someone like switchfoot in popularity) has got alot of "class" or spunk! LOL it was okay ~lydz
ok so for a band that i don't know they were pretty good...but they are defiantly missing that switchfoot touch...the p-p-p-professional part is like my favorite part of the song and it wasn't there...the lead singer kinda bugged me with the camera too...one minute it is there one minute it is not...and he seemed to be pacing and said yeah in between a lot of things...but i am gonna give them credit just because i know that i know i could not do what they did...so they are definitely better than me...lol -steph
Nay. I wasn't feeling it. The band is OK, but they were just singing the song. Switchfoot songs are more than that...
