Dare You To Move
Last night on American Idol, David Cook chose to sing "Dare You To Move". A good day in Switchfootland with getting some Idol play and being on Leno! Let's us know your thoughts on how David did.

Well......When I was watching the show and David said that he was singing a Switchfoot song, my sister and I were jumping out of our seats!!!!
But once we heard him sing the song, we found that no-one comes close to Jon's performance of "Dare You to Move". We were still happy that someone FINALLY sang a Switchfoot song though. Even though that person kinda butchered the song.
For you people reading this don't get on my back for criticizing David Cook I like the guy, just not his version of this song. And my opinion might be a little biased since Switchfoot IS my favorite band of all time.

I think he did ok. I think it comes ALOT more natural and meaningful from the guy who wrote it. ;) Personaly I'm an Archuleta fan ,but he did ok. I like Jon's version way more than what was performed last night. The song has so much meaning and has helped changed so many lives or at least I know it has changed mine. But over all it was good to see someone sing a Switchfoot song. :)

My favorite band, my favorite contestant how could it be bad? I am trying to imagine a world where I had never heard that song before and in that world I think David did pretty great!

Simon was right that it is not the best melodic song in the world.. there are a few switchfoot songs that are better.

I was watching American Idol and I hear the word "Switchfoot" and I'm all, "MOM, MOM, IT'S SWITCHFOOT!!!". I was kind of hoping to hear 'This is Your Life', since that's my absolute favorite song, but I was still exited when it wasn't( David's version wasn't as impressive as the origional, though it was good :).

Okay, I am even more set in my belief that David C. has got to win than I was before. Even though the first verse was... interesting, he gets millions of kudos just for trying. Anyone but Jon Foreman trying to sing that is gonna have huge shoes to fill, I think it was a worthy effort.

I thought david cook did amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol He should deffinately win american idol. I think he picked the perfect song because that song has so much meaning. The ending chorus was the best part tho.

RIght, I absolutely love David Cook, and was pretty much ecstatic when he said he was singing Dare You to Move (one of my favorite songs). It wasn't his best performance, but the fact that he chose to sing it made my day.
I love Switchfoot, I love him, and I'm really happy that someone has *finally* sang a Switchfoot song on Idol.

And kudos to Randy for the switchfoot endorsement :)

My first thought was, "Well, he's not Jon Foreman." But, as the song went on I realized that I was just excited to hear someone do Switchfoot on AI. I really like the way he sang the word "today" during "today never happened." I think the tiny difference in the pitch made it interesting to listen to. Switchfoot rocks and so does David Cook!

I agree with Randy (on Idol) that he was pitchy. He did a fine interpretation of the song, but it would have had that extra something it needed if he could have delivered solid vocals.
I could have seen him up there doing Meant to Live.

I don't really like david and I thought he did a bad job on this song, thought not as bad as his killing of 'Billie Jean'

Ok.. I cannot see ANY Switchfoot songs being made into covers by ANYONE. It just seems wrong.. like a karaoke of the orginal. A few artists in the past who have had this esteem (IMHO) Their songs could nto be covered. Think of Eagles for one. There was a country tribute but man nothing beats the original. Switchfoot songs are for Switchfoot to perform. One day a group of admirers will do a tribute to them as well, but not to try to score on the song... I personally did not like this David Cook version and have trouble with someone trying to do SF music.

i thought he did good! not as good as Jon tho... I think the song was to short and that he should have added the bridge and another chorus... over all tho he did great and he is the one to beat!

(by the way did you guys notice randy jackson called him jon fields? lol)

Ok all I have to say is that no one and I mean no one can do it like JON!!!! David did good, he tried but he did not serve it justice at all!!!! There is no one like Jon Foreman!! Yeah I agree I never like any of the covers that people do for a SF song!!! Plus David was kinda pitchy and he should have known that the song is not good without the bridge in it, you need that transition from the beginning to the end. You can't just jump from the beginning to the end it will totally bomb!!! But again I state he did a good job but he is no JON FOREMAN!!!! Jon's voice is too unique to be coppied, ya know what I mean. But yeah I will leave yall with that!!! LOL!! :)

AAH HAA! What a great day for SF, and me! I woke up to "GONE" blasting out of the Sirius Christian station, and then DC, on Idol, and then (to end a great day, a sweet performance on JL by SF! What a great day!
I like David Cook. He's the Idol this year. I was very impressed that he chose a SF song...I jumped up and yelled! My kids looked at me strange :). He did OK, but mostly just made me like him more because he CHOSE a SF song! That's a total compliment, even if he couldn't sing it like Jon. Not an easy song to sing either...anyone ever tried it without the music?? It's a challenge! We love you SF! You are bigger than ever now. I warned my kids about them being "big-time" after I found out about "This is Home" for Narnia...They have arrived!!!

Well I FREAKED out when I heard David say he was going to sing to Switchfoot.

Well, I was extremely excited that Switchfoot was finally getting some publicity on such a huge tv show, but in my opinion, David Cook cut the song in all the wrong places.....plus I really would only loke it when Jon sings it...the whole song....David tried hard, but he just did not sound good....

o and i thought he cut it a little short too... the next verse in my opinion is the better verse in the song but the whole thing is amazing!!

Right, well. I really like this song. I played it obsessively when it came out. I started to watch David perform it, but turned it off before he got to the chorus. He sounded like me trying to sing my way through Rock Band. Major pitch problems. Still, kudos for giving Switchfoot some much-deserved recognition.

I found out he was singing a Switchfoot song about ten minutes before he sang. I was so happy that I got to see it. I thought he did ok, but honestly, no one can ever measure up to Jon. I'm glad he tried it though, and it was also cool to hear Randy give his shout out to Switchfoot.

I wasn't home for Idol, so when I got home my mom told me David Cook did Switchfoot and I couldn't wait to check it out after the computer was free. (LOL) I had a feeling he did Dare You to Move. It’s always been a good one. Well, our exchange student, Jimmy, and I watched it and I wasn't impressed, neither was Jimmy. It was way to short and Jon's voice is just better anyways. I was very happy for Switchfoot though. And now the ultimate thing would be to have them on Idol. :O)

Very interesting take on the song. As people have said, no one sings it like Jon, but I think David did a great job making the song 'his own'. But again, GREAT day for us loyal Switchfoot fans, and I'm just glad someone finally picked a Switchfoot song for Idol. =)

David Cook did alright, but the performance got rid of one of the best parts of the song, namely how it flows and develops. Furthermore, Jon Foreman's voice, especially when he sings more softly, has an uncontrolled/fluid quality to it, which Cook tried unsuccessfully to capture during the verse. I was really excited, I am a little disappointed, but still, represent. Oh, and This is Home needs to be available as a single. Just a though.

While I'm not really an American Idol fan (I only started watching a couple weeks ago cause my roommate is in love with David Cook), it was cool to see Switchfoot's music on the show! Bummer that David's performance wasn't so great, but as so many people have mentioned, he's no Jon Foreman. But so cool that he chose this song.

The person that does the show recap for tvguide.com stated that she'd never heard of this song (seriously? was she living under a rock a few years ago when this was huge??), so I commented that she should check out this website to see what SF is all about! Yay Switchfoot! :)

Personally I don't think David did the best on that song. He could have done way better. That is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. But in David's defense it has to be hard to make the song feel complete without doing the song in its entirety. It was good towards the end when he really got into.

he did fine. even jon foreman struggles to sing that song sometimes. the vocal range required to sing that song is extremely wide. Anyone who can sing it without flopping is clearly talented.

So let's see... Mutemath and Switchfoot have been covered on AI... maybe Mae is next? :-)!!!

my jaw dropped when he said he was gonna do switchfoot. i think that david's arrangement of the song wasn't bad, but he was so flat on the end of the verse and on the chorus that i couldn't stand it! if he had been on pitch, i think i would have liked it. but i do give him props for doing a switchfoot song. i think though that he would have been better off doing something like "gone" or "stars". still it wasnt the worst song of the night.

i love david cook (and archuleta, for that matter), but i just don't think he did any justice to the song. jon performs it a million times better, and with much more feeling and passion. david was, as randy so eloquently puts it, "pitchy", and he just didn't look into it. i was ecstatic, though, when i heard he was singing switchfoot.

I agree that no one can do that song other than Jon, that's his song. I'm thrilled that Cook did a Switchfoot song and I thought he did the best with the time he was allowed. He made it his own and of course it doesn't compare to Jon. I think it would have been even better if he chose one that isn't a radio hit because everyone knows that side of Switchfoot. Maybe something from a more recent album that has more edge.

The preformance was alright. I have to agree that there are a lot more melodic songs by Switchfoot that would work better for American Idol or a contest like it. My favorite part of both nights was the fact that each time Randy or Ryan mentioned the song or Switchfoot the crowd started cheering just because of the song. I'm glad to know that Switchfoot has such a strong fan base, because people don't cheer like that for just any song. I've been a fan for years and to see how far they've come makes me happy inside!!!

i don't mind people covering switchfoot songs. i personally love doing it. i just sing them acoustically... because that's the closest i am going to come to trying to perform the original. it's not fair to SF to try and copy them. to tribute them, yes. but, to copy them... no.

and to put it bluntly.... david cook sucked at singing this song. off key (not pitchy. i don't think many people understand what that word actually means.) but, he was off key, flat, and really just kind of butchered the song. he tried too hard frankly. dare u to move is a song of passion and conviction. he may have had both... but, it didn't show through.

Not only am I excited to see a fellow Tulsan performing on American Idol, but the fact that he chose to do a SF song was beyond amazing! Although it wasn't his best peformance ever, you've got to give the guy a break because he only had about a minute to fit in all the great parts of that song. I think that if he had a chance to sing more of the song it would have been much better! So props to David C. for attempting such an amazing song!

Poor David! The guy gave it his best shot and you're all nitpicking on whether or not he sang it off key or how he compares to Jon. I'll be honest - I'm not a Switchfoot fan. I didn't know this song before I heard he was going to sing it but before watching his performance I made sure to watch the music video and hear the original version. I thought - given the time limitation, he did a pretty good job at it.

And no, I'm not going to bother comparing him to Jon because: 1. It's so stupid comparing one singer to the other. 2. I simply can't, I don't listen to Switchfoot.

At the end of the day, David did Switchfoot a big favor. This song is now climbing up the charts thanks to the exposure AI gave it. More people who may have not heard of Switchfoot or heard their music before are now going to check them out and Switchfoot were presented in a very positive light on one of the rating-bombs shows on TV. So give David a break. All he wanted was to play a song that inspired him from a band that he likes. Just that he gets to do that on American Idol and other people don't get that big of a platform.

And for those wondering - I came on this site to see what Switchfoot fans made of David's performance, this is what I'm doing here.

First I have to state some things: Switchfoot is my favorite band of all time! Second, I love David Cook! I definitely want him to win AI this year, but here are my thoughts on just his preformance of "Dare You to Move" the other night.

When it was first announced that Cook would be singing switchfoot, I stinking cheered out loud in my living room! What a great combination! However, I was disappointed quite a bit by this preformance. I'll try to be objective in my critiques, but it is hard, considering how much I love Foreman's voice, writing, and music in general.

The verse for the song was not only off key, it's like he's trying to make it more grungy than it should be. The verse to this song should be softer sounding like the guitar part that goes along with it.

As the song went to the chorus, it did continue to drift off key, I like some of the things he tried to do during the chorus, but he didn't pull them off. Overall, the preformance wasn't really that good, but I should at least say this for David Cook:

    A. This is one of the most well-known songs of this generation. Preformance aside, it did make a great song choice.

    B. It would be hard to pull this song off when you can only use like... a little over a minute of the song. It is a song that needs to build up. It was a good try considering how short the song had to be. (In other words, for once I actually agree w/ Paula's comment)

    C. I don't think David disgraced Swithfoot in any way by preforming this song. He WAS trying to choose a song that he respected, and although the preformance didn't do Switchfoot justice, it did bring some more popularity to the song. It was the thought that counted.

Now, apart from David's actual preformance of the song, there are some other things I wanted to mention about the situation:

    1. As soon as Ryan said Cook would be singing Switchfoot, the croud went wild, even more so when the song title was announced.

    2. When Randy started talking, he said he liked the whole switchfoot thing and the crowd went wild again.

    3. Did Randy call Jon, "Jon Fields"? 'Cause that's what it sounded like to me...

Anyways... just my thoughts... I LOVED the fact that somebody finally sang some Switchfoot on AI!
    I love David Cook!!!
    I love Switchfoot!!!

i think he did ok..jon can do it much much much better. i think the song can preform better when it mean something big to you and thats why i think jon rocks at it. i love switchfoot sooo much..but i am a David Archuleta fan..so i guess i can say he did ok.

david cook tried....but no one can even come close to matching jon's amazingly incredible vocal powers, jerome's keyboard skillz, tim's shredding bass, drew's guitar mastery, and chad's drumming adeptness!!!!!

OK. David Cook's Dare You to Move doesnt compare to the original, doesnt even come close to Jon Foreman but to think out of thousand songs out there, he chose it, was beyond words for me.

Im a HUGE Switchfoot fan and became one the first time I heard Dare You to Move.

To have a Switchfoot song in Idol is just so cool for me!

I was so thrilled when I learned David Cook's doing it last Tuesday. It's just so cool. Switchfoot in Idol?! Wow!

So come on you guys, give him a break! Im so voting for David Cook this AI finale!

It's rare to find fans of the original who like the cover version of a song! Even the Radiohead fans hated Jon's cover of Sorrow, There There etc. (Although personally I liked them.)

well, maybe its not fair since i'm a fan...but he completely destroyed the chorus. other than the chorus he was okay

Well, I was happy he sang it because it made me look up your albums and download some songs. Sorry, but I'd never heard of Switchfoot before, but now you guys are becoming a fast favorite.

This version that David Cook sang was not a very good one I have to say. The origional was a MILLION times better. I thought he killed the song. David Cook is a good singer, but this time he failed big time.

I have to agree with a lot that has been said. It was exciting to see a Switchfoot song done, but David quite simply is not Jon Foreman, Jon just has a very unique voice (as well as David) and they aren't the same. I also think that maybe there would have been other songs somewhat better for his voice, even though they are not as well known as Dare you to Move. It is not an easy song and he was a bit pitchy.

It was cool to see the crowds reaction though, that alone testifies to just how many like Switchfoot.

this was not the best cover of the song "Dare You to Move" this was knidof a sad night because of the way the song was sung BUT the fact of the matter is that Switchfoots song "Dare You TO Move" was used in somethign besides my iPOD i am happy

sorry but david cook destroyed the song completelly. not even closely to swithfoot. i heard this song in the movie "a walk to remember" and i saw the clip of the song. no one else can sing it better than john.and no one can play it better than swithfoot.

john, no one can sing the dare you to move chorus better than jon!

    David Cook likes Switchfoot!

"Cook wants "a pop-based rock" record, citing such influences as Switchfoot and Jimmy Eat World. Archuleta will seek music "that's in the soul," along with pop that fits someone his age."

Actually a Switchfoot song has been played on Idol before in Aus.
'Meant to Live' was played two years ago.
And 'Dare You to Move' last year.

I'm sooooo glad he won AMERICAN IDOL!!!!!!!
No, I hadn't noticed that Randy had called him Jon Fields.

^ Jon Fields IS the producer. Jon Foreman is the lead singer in Switchfoot.

Anwyays, what a pleasant surprise to hear this on Idol! It definitely bumped some numbers for Sf and the song Dare You to Move which is awesome. David did pretty good, not amazing, but that's okay since it turned out to be great exposure and a reminder to everyone that Switchfoot's still out there rocking!
