vicky - i agree w/ Gelli. if ya wanna use the word "emo" you can't really seperate it from how society has twisted it - like it or not, that's the sad reality. if you want anyone to understand you, you'll have to specifically define the term for them.
so in this case, emo is a bad word to define switchfoot because everyone will just think of society's meaning.

They may not be emo in the sense of how teeny boppers view it (wearing black nail polish and eyeliner.. aka a fashion statement), but they are extremely "emotional" and that is something I love about them."

I'd have to disagree with you, there. SF sings about things greater than emotions, feelings, and thoughts (note "24"), and although those things are certainly not left out, that's not the focus, thus "emo" is a bit of a misnomer. In my humble opinion.

If you use the word emo honestly, if does apply to them. I'm not speaking in the Simple Plan, musical emo sense of the word, but the actual meaning. (If you have 16 of their songs on your Itunes, you are free to judge them) I like to use words the way they were meant to be used, not the way society twisted them into being.

I think emo describes Switchfoot quite well. Emo is emotional, and since when is Switchfoot not singing about emotions, feelings, ect.? @tina, haha yeah it's more epic than O!G, which doesn't get any more epic than "Circles". NIS was more epic. But O!G's light feel isn't a bad thing - I love it. Another NIS would've been slightly painful.

@Dan, I agree that 4 stars would've been more accurate. IMO, 3 stars would be accurate for TBL and 3.5 for NIS.

Gosh...when I see reviews like that, it's painfully obvious to me that it's the reviewer's first real experience with the band. I'd argue with the rating too (I'd agree with their 3 stars to Nothing Is Sound, but O!G is another 4-star disc like The Beautiful Letdown).

Also, since when do Switchfoot fans care about AMG? They rather butchered their review of The Legend of Chin as well.

speaking of album recommendations, phil, you NEED to listen to cursive's happy hollow. its one of the most painfully honest albums on the foibles of organized religion. if you thought the ugly organ was good, this one will blow you away.

I don't know, I just don't at all associate Switchfoot and emo-ness. But then again, I don't generally associate anything good with emo-ness. And "Christian-emo"?? That's too much... I wish we weren't always so quick to slap labels on music, when the important thing isn't really the style, but how well the music is done.

In other news, I just ordered Cities, and I'm excited to get it. I think Anberlin is great... :)

Who knows? It might be to their advantage. I'm a fan of the shoegazing era (when you were 9 years old?) and if I remember correctly, people sometimes referred to the Smashing Pumpkins as shoegazers, and it didn't hurt. :) (Although I do have a bad memory).
